On August 6, 2019, 5 more communities in Polk County will vote for or against a one-cent local option sales and service tax (LOSST). These communities are Bondurant, Clive, Grimes, Johnston, and Urbandale. Some of these communities have the local tax in the Dallas County portion of their cities already. We urge you to vote. As noted in a post on this website after another election, turnout matters.
Each of the communities proposes to use at least 50% of the revenue received to reduce property taxes, as is required by the law allowing the LOSST. Bondurant proposes to use 60% for property tax offset. Many of the 5 communities have taken a proposal for use of the money from Des Moines’ victorious ballot initiative and specifically include public library spending as part of the use of the sales tax revenue, as indicated in the community’s ballot initiative language.
Infrastructure and bike trails or entertainment/sports spaces are also in many of the initiatives.
If the sales tax passes in any of the communities on August 6th, the tax will start being collected on January 1, 2020. The local sales tax went into effect on July 1, 2019, for the 6 communities giving support to the tax in March 2019 elections.
